This workshop has been developed for all JDI member programs, DPH funded rape crisis centers and invited guests only. If you are not affiliated with one of these programs, you may not register.
If you are interested in learning about new ways to engage your community in a meaningful process to deepen your prevention work and collaborative relationships, this workshop is for you!
Join prevention educators, volunteer coordinators, advocates and other staff in an interactive workshop where we will explore the ways in which domestic and sexual violence are rooted in and connected to a larger context of societal oppression.
We will examine strategies to create opportunities for change by cultivating relationships and holding power with survivors and our communities. Participants will develop new and concrete skills for engaging survivors, community members and one another through learning about one-on-one dialogues, an approach that leads to deepening our connections to our communities.
This workshop will be presented as part of the collaborative initiative between Close to Home, an organization whose mission is to foster community-wide responsibility to prevent and reduce the impact of domestic violence and The Network/La Red, a social justice organization dedicated to ending partner abuse and oppression in LGBQ/T, SM and Polyamorous communities.
Hema Sarang-Sieminski is the Director of Community Engagement at The Network/La Red and is a member of the GLBT Domestic Violence Coalition and the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs. She has advocated on behalf of survivors of abuse for over ten years and brings to her work a commitment to promoting the rights and dignity of women, people of color and LGBT, immigrant and other marginalized communities.
Aisha Shillingford is Close to Home’s Program Director/Lead Organizer overseeing CTH’s local practice as well as participating in CTH’s training and support work. Aisha has more than ten years of experience in youth work, community organizing and nonprofit administration.
