This workshop has been developed for all JDI member programs,
DPH funded rape crisis centers and JDI invited guests.
Many of us work with parents in our sexual assault and/or domestic violence programs- in schools and in our communities. Have you heard parents anxiously discuss questions or concerns about their adolescents’ growing sexuality? Join us for this workshop on how to support and encourage parents who are experiencing a learning curve in handling these situations, during a time of immense change physically, emotionally and interpersonally. The realities of social networking, violence, harassment and bullying represent (in part) the many obstacles people may face in this developmental stage. As professionals, we can support parents in helping their youth develop values related to sexuality, learn facts and resources, practice positive communication skills, and maintain healthier, safer, and more satisfying relationships.
Participants will:
- Explore adolescent development stages in relation to sex and sexuality
- Define and explore the pros and cons of different communication styles
- Develop strategies to engage parents in creating ongoing conversations with youth about healthier, safe and better-informed decisions relating to sexuality
- Learn how to help parents clarify their values around these topics.
- Receive a free copy of It’s Perfectly Normal by Robie Harris, Candlewick Press, 2009
We will also hear directly from Everywoman’s Center and the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center about their work with parents in local communities.
