Systems Change and Community: Putting Your Experiences and Perspectives Into Practice

Ever wonder why the systems survivors navigate still don’t understand some of the basics of trauma-informed or survivor-centered support that you live and breathe each day?

Ever wish you could change those systems so they do a better job of supporting survivors you work with?

As advocates, you hold important information about what harms and what supports survivors as they navigate their path to healing. In the day-to-day demand of individual advocacy, connecting to the work to make change in these systems can feel daunting. In this training, you will have an opportunity to engage in discussions about developing strategies for policy and systems advocacy to benefit survivors and their families. We will introduce you to the basic anatomy of some of the major systems survivors must navigate (health care, education, housing, law enforcement, DCF).  We will then practice translating your experiences as advocates into talking points to advocate for important changes within these systems. Finally, we will discuss what it takes to advocate for these changes at the community, regional, and state levels and how JDI can support you in this work.
